Meet Rhonda, Our Partner Recognition Winner!
Over the last year and a half, we have all seen firsthand how important our essential workers are to keeping our communities. They help us check out at the store, keep our neighborhoods clean through waste collection, and volunteer to help vulnerable neighbors in need. Volunteers and their respective community organizations have worked tirelessly to support their neighbors during the Covid-19 pandemic.
In March 2020, 20 million jobs vanished overnight. As people have struggled with medical costs, paying rent, and supporting their families, food security has grown increasingly unsteady. These socioeconomic disparities have disproportionately impacted our BIPOC communities as well. During this time, reliable food access programs have become absolutely critical.
Thankfully, many organizations around the country (and the world) have stepped up to ensure consistent access to nutritious food. We've had a first row seat to these efforts, watching our partners achieve what would have been nearly impossible without committed volunteers. That’s why Hungry Harvest is launching a new practice to recognize some of the volunteers who have been steadfast in their efforts to support healthy food access in their communities. Take for example, the College Park Community Food Bank.
If you visited this food bank, you might just come across Rhonda “Ro” Johnson. Since October 2020, Ro has consistently volunteered during food distributions. She brings her cheerful and energetic attitude to work every single time, creating a safe space for food bank clients, staff, and fellow-volunteers. Ro willingly shows up and performs whatever tasks are needed to fulfill the food bank's mission to reduce hunger in the community. Ro Johnson’s impact on the community, especially newer volunteers, is invaluable. Through her commitment to the food bank, she helps to foster a safe and inclusive space for clients, as well as new volunteers. She shares her experiences and advice with them and has become a true role model for all the volunteers. Her commitment to the work is an inspiration to fellow volunteers, food recipients, and the entire College Park community working together to fight hunger.
Ms. Johnson shared her perspective with us saying “I am just one person, and the need is so great. Giving together as a community, one unit, helps to serve more and give back.”
In the coming months, you’ll have a chance to see more of the faces that have kept our communities well nourished. Follow Hungry Harvest and chime in to recognize the volunteers for their commitment and service during this ongoing crisis. We are beyond excited to recognize Ro Johnson as our first Volunteer of the Month. Because of her amazing contribution to fight food insecurity, we are awarding Ro a $250 donation to an organization of her choice, as well as one month of FREE Hungry Harvest! Congratulations, Ro!
