Fresh Food as Medicine: How Our Partnership with AbsoluteCare Supports Diabetes Health

Partnering for Better Diabetes Health This November

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month which is an opportunity to to recognize the millions of people impacted by diabetes, to raise awareness about prevention, management, and the importance of healthy food access to support better health outcomes. With more than 38 million Americans living with diabetes and over 98 million with prediabetes, the need for access to nutritious foods has never been more urgent than now. Healthy eating plays a powerful role in preventing and managing diabetes — and at Hungry Harvest, that belief guides everything we do.

That’s why we partnered with AbsoluteCare to support their diabetes management program by providing members with fresh fruits and vegetables. Over the course of seven weeks, participating members rotated through the pilot, gaining consistent access to produce that supports stable blood sugar and overall wellbeing. Nutritious options like leafy greens, berries, avocados, apples, and carrots provide essential fiber and nutrients — helping reduce reliance on processed foods that can worsen diabetes control.

The feedback has been incredibly inspiring. Dr. Aruna Nathan, Physician and Lead Physician for Lifestyle Medicine at AbsoluteCare, shared;

"I'm delighted to share some heartwarming updates from our partnership. Our members are thoroughly enjoying the produce, and it's making a significant positive impact on their health."

Members are developing new favorite foods and new routines — one step, one bite at a time. Another shared that their grandchild’s love for the apples and carrots included in their box. It’s beautiful to see healthy eating habits becoming contagious and whole families benefiting together.

Access to healthier options isn’t just a matter of diet — it’s a matter of dignity and preventative healthcare. This pilot shows how fresh produce and nourishing meals can transform daily life for those managing diabetes. Thank you Dr. Nathan, Nicole Fisher, Brad Mendelson, and Dr. Serlin at AbsoluteCare for believing in this work and trusting Hungry Harvest to support this program.

We are proud to stand alongside partners this National Diabetes Awareness Month to improve health outcomes through food access. If your organization is passionate about improving health outcomes through nutrition, let’s partner.

Let’s create healthier futures, one harvest at a time.
